Close to the heart of the lagoon of Venice, the industrial harbor of Marghera, contained high levels of PCB contaminated sediments. For economical and health reasons the decision was made to remove the sediments.

The ecologically, economically and hydrologically sensitive nature of the site and the magnitude of the problem explain why the site became the object of many years of studies.
